Description:
L0 = 67 – 278 mm; D = III, 18 – 22; A = III, 5 – 6; P = 13 – 16; V = 16 – 9
The fish’s body is laterally compressed, with a tapered head and a well-proportioned shape. It possesses two pairs of barbels. The mouth is directed forward and is relatively wide.
The dorsal fin originates slightly posterior to the origin of the pelvic fins. The pectoral fins do not reach the pelvic fins. The pelvic fins almost reach the anal fin. The height of the anal fin is nearly equal to the height of the dorsal fin. The spines of both the dorsal and anal fins have serrations on their inner surfaces. The caudal fin has two lobes that are nearly equal in size. The anus is located anterior to the base of the anal fin. The fish exhibits a dark coloration on its dorsal surface and a white coloration on its ventral surface. The fins often display a reddish hue.
Distribution:
The carp is a commonly cultivated fish species in the northern regions of Vietnam. They are capable of surviving in most types of aquatic environments, throughout various geographical regions. Ponds, lakes, and rice paddies are the most common habitats. Due to varying living conditions within their distribution range, significant variations within the carp species are observed. Notable variations include scale shape and count, coloration, body size, and overall morphology. White, red, and purple color morphs of carp have been observed.
