Latin name:Telenomus abnormis
Vietnamese Name:Ong telenomus abnormis
Family:Scelionidae
Order:Hymenoptera
Class (Group):

Female:

  • Head: Transverse, with a width twice the length, slightly wider than the thorax. The vertex behind the ocelli is slightly abruptly curved, with a transverse ridge. The temple behind the compound eye is narrow. Ocelli are located close to the edge of the compound eye, with the distance between them less than the diameter of the ocellus. The frons above the antennal sockets is not concave, without transverse striae, and does not bulge between the antennal sockets and the edge of the compound eye. The middle of the frons is smooth, and the sides of the frons near the edge of the compound eye, vertex, and cheeks have small granular sculpturing.
  • Compound Eyes: Oval-shaped, with a length greater than the width (12:8). At 56x magnification, short hairs are clearly visible.
  • Antennae: 10-segmented, clavate. The scape is 5 times longer than wide and 4.4 times longer than the second antennal segment. The second antennal segment is longer than the third. The fourth and fifth antennal segments are shorter than the third. The fifth antennal segment is the smallest, with a length and width approximately equal (nearly spherical). The club has 5 segments, and the total length of the club segments is about 3 times greater than their maximum width, equal to the length of the scape.
  • Thorax: The length and width are nearly equal. The mesoscutum lacks a median groove, and the sculpturing on this area is granular. The scutellum is almost smooth. The forewing is about 2.5 times longer than wide; the postmarginal vein is about twice as long as the stigmal vein.
  • Abdomen: Slightly narrower than the thorax, with the width slightly less than the length (16:20). The first tergite is short, its length is only about 1/3 of the length of the second tergite. The second tergite is longer and wider than other abdominal tergites, its length is equal to its width. The first tergite and the anterior part of the second tergite have longitudinal striations, while the rest of the second tergite is smooth.
  • Coloration: Body black. Antennae club segments black, the remaining antennal segments yellowish-brown. Wings transparent, wing veins brown. Legs yellowish-brown.

Male:

Similar in shape and color to the female, but differs in having 12-segmented, filiform antennae.

Size:

Body length approximately 0.65 – 0.8 mm.

Ecology:

Parasitic in the eggs of Arctornis chrysorrhoea (according to Wu et Chen, 1980). In Vietnam, they were found in the eggs of Euproctis similis Fuessly (Lymantriidae) on sugarcane.

Distribution:

  • Vietnam: Hanoi, Ha Tay.
  • Elsewhere: Oriental region, China (Gaing To, Zhejiang).

Type Material:

8 females and 2 males (Hanoi), 31/7/1983 (Le Xuan Hue). Specimens are preserved at the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources (Hanoi).
