Identification:

An unfamiliar insect species, with a wingspan of 70-73 mm. The head (including the elongated portion) is black on the top and sides, with small, irregular white spots. The underside of the head is earth-yellow. The pronotum and mesonotum are earth-yellow or yellowish-green dorsally, with a black stripe running along the middle of the pronotum and mesonotum. There are three small spots on each side of the leading edge, one wide oblique spot, and two small spots trailing to the black mesonotum. The abdomen, the underside of the thorax, and the legs are earth-yellow. The proboscis, tarsal segments, and tarsi are black or charcoal-purple.

The forewings are dark green from the base to 2/3 of the wing length, followed by pale brown. Near the wing base are a stripe of earth-yellow and two oblique stripes of earth-yellow that cross each other. There are three earth-yellow spots arranged in an oblique row, and five earth-yellow spots that cross the wing in the apical region, with a white outer margin. The spots in the wing tips are smaller and irregular. The hindwings are charcoal-purple at the wing tips. The remaining parts of the hindwings are straw-yellow.

The length from the top of the head to the compound eye is 16-20 mm. The length from the compound eye to the end of the abdomen is approximately 22-23 mm.

Biology and Ecology:

The larvae live underground, feeding on the humus of the forest floor in their distribution areas. In Southern Vietnam, this species’ larvae molt at the beginning of the rainy season (May) annually.

Distribution:

The species is prevalent from the North to Đồng Nai and An Giang provinces, including Phú Thọ, Vĩnh Phúc (Tam Đảo), Ninh Bình (Cúc Phương), and Đồng Nai. This species inhabits low altitudes in the Vĩnh Cửu Nature Reserve and Cát Tiên National Park, up to an elevation of 400m (Mount Cấm – An Giang).
