Identification:
Wingspan: 67-75 mm. The head (including the elongated part) is reddish-brown with numerous small, irregular white spots. The prothorax and mesothorax are yellowish-brown. The forewing, from the wing base to two-thirds of its length, is dark green; the remaining portion is pale brown. Near the wing base, there are yellowish-brown streaks, two of which are diagonally crossed and are also yellowish-brown. Three spots arranged in a row are also yellowish-brown. Five yellowish-brown spots, arranged horizontally, are located near the wing apex, with white outer edges. The spots in the apical region of the wing are smaller and also yellowish-brown. The hindwing apex is dark purple-black; the rest of the hindwing is bright yellow.
Length from head apex to compound eye: 16-20 mm. Length from compound eye to abdomen end: 21-25 mm.
Biology and Ecology:
The larvae live underground and feed on the humus layers of the forest floor where they are distributed. Larvae of this species molt at the beginning of the rainy season each year.
Distribution:
A common species, found in large numbers in Northern Vietnam, including the provinces of Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc (Tam Dao), Lang Son, Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Cao Bang, and Ninh Binh (Cuc Phuong National Park).
