Identification:

This cicada species is of medium size, with a wingspan of 55-60mm. The head, pronotum, and mesonotum are dark brown. The forewings are very pale brown with numerous irregularly distributed dark spots. The hindwings have a black apical area, a pale blood-red basal area extending to one-third of the wing, a reddish-brown base, and an orange-yellow central area with three small white spots and unevenly distributed black spots present on both the yellow and red areas. The dorsal abdomen, near the mesonotum, is covered with a layer of white powder, with a deeper reddish-brown color underneath.

Biology and Ecology:

The larvae live underground and feed on the humus layer of the forest floor in their distribution areas. In Southern Vietnam, the larvae of this species undergo metamorphosis at the beginning of the rainy season each year.

Distribution:

This is a rare and uncommon species found from the North to Đồng Nai province, including Phú Thọ, Vĩnh Phúc (Tam Đảo), Ninh Bình (Cúc Phương), and Đồng Nai. This species inhabits lower altitudes within the Vĩnh Cửu Nature Reserve and Cát Tiên National Park.
