Identification:

  • Dorsal and Body: Moderate green, with a lighter green ventral side.
  • Lateral Stripe: A white stripe, sometimes bordered with orange or deep red, runs along the first row of scales on the body.
  • Males: Occasionally possess a white stripe behind the eye.
  • Tail: Pale reddish-brown.
  • Scales: Smooth scales on the head, keeled scales on the body.

Biology and Ecology:

This nocturnal reptile is most often found in bushes and low shrubs in hilly terrain at elevations between 900m and 1,500m. The diet of this species is currently unknown. Each clutch contains approximately 7-12 offspring, with newborn snakes measuring 12-18cm in length. This species is venomous and poses a danger.

Distribution:

  • Vietnam: Gia Lai (Song Ba Farm), Sơklang, Đồng Nai (Chua Chan), Lâm Đồng (Bao Loc), Minh Hai (Nam Can).
  • Global: Widely distributed throughout northern and southern Thailand, western Malaysia south to Pulau Tioman, northeastern India, Myanmar, Indochina, the island of Sumatra, and western Malaysia.

Notes:

The species Trimeresurus popeorum previously reported by Campden-Man in 1970 in southern Vietnam was, in fact, an adult of the species Viridovipera vogeli (as published by Vogel and colleagues in 2004).
