Identification:
This is a medium-sized viper belonging to the Viperidae family. The body length ranges from 390 to 620 mm, with a tail length of 80 to 125 mm. It has a large, robust head and a stout body. The body is patterned with white, red, or dark green markings. The top of the head is black with pale green spots. The ventral scales are white with black edges, and the tail is black. Adults exhibit a brighter green coloration with red and white spots or bands. Color and pattern variations exist depending on the geographic location.
Biology and Ecology:
This reptile is primarily nocturnal. Its diet consists mainly of small rodents, but it also consumes amphibians. It is a venomous species that can be lethal. It inhabits areas with dense undergrowth in evergreen forests, mangrove forests, and up to an altitude of approximately 1,200 meters above sea level. As a nocturnal predator, it primarily feeds on amphibians found within its habitat. It is typically arboreal, known for its slow movements, remaining still for extended periods while ambushing prey.
