Identification:

  • Shell: Triangular in shape, approximately 200 mm in length, with well-developed shell scales. The shell margin is short, about half the shell length. The pedal groove is narrow to slightly wide. The width of the convex and concave portions of the radial ridge are approximately equal. The mantle often exhibits stripes and various colors. There are no boring marks on the substrate.

Biology and Ecology:

  • Lives on the surface of coral reefs at depths up to 10 meters, often residing in the crevices between reefs.

Distribution:

  • Vietnam: Khanh Hoa, Truong Sa, Binh Thuan, Con Dao, Phu Quoc.
  • Global: Indian Ocean, Western Pacific Ocean.

Value:

  • Scientific and aesthetic value. This is a large bivalve in the Vietnamese marine mollusk industry. Some individuals should be kept in ocean water parks for educational purposes to help students learn about the species’ ecology and behavior. It is also exploited for food, handicrafts, and its shell is used in the lime burning industry.

Status:

  • The population of this species has declined significantly due to overexploitation for food, coral exploitation, and natural disasters, which have reduced its distribution range.
