Identification:

Shell: Typically less than 50 cm in length. The shell is asymmetrical, elongated towards the posterior end (siphonal region), with the hinge length approximately half the shell length. The scales are poorly developed. The pedal gape (opening for the foot) is usually wide.

Mantle: Light in color. It bores into coral reefs but does not penetrate deeply.

Biology and Ecology:

Lives in shallow waters on coral reefs, partially attached to the reef substrate.

Distribution:

Vietnam: Quảng Nam, Đà Nẵng, Khánh Hòa, Trường Sa (Spratly Islands), Côn Đảo.

Worldwide: Indo-West Pacific region.

Value:

Of scientific and aesthetic value. As a large bivalve species in Vietnam, it is recommended that individuals be kept in marine parks and aquariums to provide opportunities for students to study the species’ ecology and behavior.

Conservation Status:

The population of this species has significantly decreased due to overexploitation for food, coral harvesting, and natural disasters, which have reduced its distribution range.
