Plumage:

  • Face: Tawny facial disc, the lower part slightly paler than the upper part, with a mahogany-brown border.
  • Dorsal Plumage: Dark brown on the back, with the head and neck nearly black, while the flanks and uppertail are tinged with pale tawny. The head, neck, and back are marked with black-edged white spots that extend onto the uppertail feathers, becoming irregular transverse barring.
  • Scapular Feathers: Outer scapular feathers have large white markings and dark brown barring.
  • Wing Coverts: Similar in color to the back but with fewer spots, except on the greater coverts, where the spots become broad, mottled, dark brown markings near the tips.
  • Primary Flight Feathers: Dark brown with pale brown edging and tawny transverse bands on the inner webs near the base.
  • Tertiary Flight Feathers: These bands are wider and become mahogany-brown.
  • Central Tail Feathers: Brown with paler tips and barring; the outer tail feathers have broader barring and dark brown edging.
  • Underparts: Pale tawny chin, white throat and foreneck. The remainder of the underparts are white tinged with tawny and marked with dark brown barring; these markings are broad and dense on the chest, becoming narrower and sparser on the belly and undertail.
  • Eyes: Dark brown.
  • Bill and Base of Bill: Black or pale greenish-black.
  • Feet: Horn-gray.

Distribution:

  • Found in eastern Myanmar, Thailand, Indochina, Sumatra, Java, and Borneo.
  • In Vietnam, this species is only found in the South (quite common in Tra Vinh, Bien Hoa, Thu Dau Mot, and Tay Ninh provinces).
