Adult Chim Appearance:
- Facial Disc: White.
- Head: Black plumage on the forehead, brown and white barring on the nape, with black feather shafts. White barring above the eyes.
- Dorsal Surface: Dark brown with a longitudinal streak down the center of the feathers (excluding the nape). Feather sides are mottled, broader on the back and thinner on the flanks.
- Shoulder Feathers: Broad white streaks on the outer feather vanes.
- Wing Coverts and Secondary Flight Feathers: Similar in color to the back. Outer greater coverts have white markings near the tips of the outer vanes. Primary coverts are barred with brown and mottled with gray-brown.
- Primaries: Black, with chestnut-brown barring on the outer feather vanes of the outermost feathers. The following feathers have broad barring on both feather vanes.
- Tail: Central tail feathers are dark brown with mottled edges. Outer tail feathers have brown horizontal barring.
- Ventral Surface: White. The chin and throat are dark brown barred, with a dark streak down the center of the feathers on the upper chest. The chest and the front of the abdomen have both streaks and bars. The rear abdomen and undertail coverts have streaks only, without barring.
- Eyes: Dark brown.
- Bill: Dull yellow.
- Base of Bill: Brown skin.
- Legs: Lead gray.

- Tarsus: 45 – 48 mm
- Bill: 22 – 24 mm
Distribution:
This owl species is found in the Himalayas, Assam, Thailand, Southern China, and Indochina. In Vietnam, this species has only been recorded in the dense forests of Lào Cai (Sapa).
