Identification:
Medium-sized snail, elongated and spindle-shaped, with 6 whorls. Whorls are narrow, the apex is pointed, and the final whorl accounts for more than half the shell height, slightly bulging at the midpoint. The shell surface is earth-brown with fine longitudinal ridges. There are large, dark brown bands on the whorls. The aperture is heart-shaped and flared, occupying almost half the shell height, with a sharp lip. The inner lip has three large brown streaks.
Biology and Ecology:
Inhabits the bottom of rivers and streams in mountainous regions, with soft substrate or boulders. Often found clinging to boulders. No biological data are currently available.
Distribution:
- Within Vietnam: Cao Bằng (Hạ Lang), Lai Châu (Phong Thổ).
- Global: A narrow endemic species, only found in Vietnam.
Value:
An endemic species with a limited distribution in a narrow band of mountainous areas in northern Vietnam: Cao Bằng (Hạ Lạng), Lai Châu (Phong Thổ). Has little food value. Of scientific value.
Conservation Status:
Prior to 1975, the estimated distribution area was less than 20,000 km². Its habitat is limited, with an estimated area of about 500 km². To date, the distribution area and habitat have decreased, possibly due to exploitation.
Assessment:
VU B1+2a,b,e (Vulnerable).
Conservation Measures:
Included in the Vietnam Red Book. Further research on biological and ecological characteristics is needed.
