Identification:
This terrestrial turtle species is characterized by:
- Small size.
- An elongated, domed, and narrow carapace (shell) with a distinct ridge along the spine. The carapace is low-profile with smooth edges, measuring approximately 12-15 cm in length.
- A small head that can retract into the shell.
- The nape of the neck (back of the neck) having two or four bright yellow or off-white spots, with a single black dot in the center.
- Three faint white stripes along each side of the neck.
- A short tail.
- A pale brown plastron (belly shell).
Biology and Ecology:
This species inhabits ponds, lakes, and streams within evergreen forests. Its diet primarily consists of snails, crabs, shrimp, and other small crustaceans.
Distribution:
- Vietnam: Found in the forests of northern and central Vietnam: Lào Cai (Bảo Hà), Quảng Ninh (Tân Ấp), Hà Tĩnh (Vụ Quang), and Quảng Nam – Đà Nẵng (Phúc Sơn).
- Global: Southern China (Hainan Island), Laos (northeastern mountains and central Trường Sơn region).
Conservation Status:
Due to low population numbers, this species is very rare. It is classified as Endangered A1d+2d by the IUCN. Urgent action is needed to include this species in the Vietnamese Red Book. Strict measures are required to prohibit hunting and trading. Captive breeding programs within protected areas are crucial for propagation, reintroduction into the natural environment, and preservation of the genetic resource.
