Identification:

The head of this attractive snake is dark brown or black. The upper lip is white with black suture-like markings; the chin and throat are plain white. The body is cylindrical, slender, and a pale greenish-brown with circular, reddish-faded spots along the flanks that diminish towards the anterior end. The belly is white with black circular spots along the edges. Juveniles have V-shaped markings on their neck. Adults reach approximately 77 cm in length.

Biology and Ecology:

This species is typically found near streams during the day. It preys on mice, small birds, frogs, and lizards. Each clutch contains 3-10 eggs. Hatchlings emerge after an incubation period of 7-9 weeks and are 15-22 cm long. This snake inhabits dense montane forests up to an altitude of 1,700 meters.

Distribution:

  • Vietnam: Hà Tây (Ba Vì), Hoà Bình, Hà Bắc, Nghệ An, Hà Tĩnh, Quảng Trị, Gia Lai, Lâm Đồng, Đồng Nai (Trảng Bom)
  • Global: This species is distributed throughout Southeast Asia, including Hainan, the Philippines, and various locations in Indonesia.

Status:

The population is considered relatively common.
