Adult Morphology:

The entire head, neck, and chest are dark brown. The chin and the front of the neck are often slightly lighter, and the crown is darker. The remaining back, shoulders, and the innermost primary flight feathers are rufous-brown. The wing coverts are black with broad white bands. The dark brown tail has faint white barring. The belly is barred black and white, with the under-tail coverts exhibiting some rufous coloration.

Juvenile Morphology:

The head and neck are the same color as the back. The chest is lighter brown. The rest of the back is pale white intermixed with brown horizontal barring. The eyes are dark red. The bare skin around the eyes is red. The beak is pale black, with a paler base and a faint greenish hue. The legs are bright red.

Measurements:

Wing: 118 – 131 mm; Tail: 49 – 51 mm; Beak: 20 – 21 mm.

Distribution:

This rail species is distributed in southern Myanmar, Malaysia, and Indonesia. In Vietnam, this species has only been recorded in the southern region.
