Identification
Description:
A small-sized snake. The triangular head is distinctly separated from the neck. The top of the head is covered with small scales, with scales above the eyes developed into horn-like projections, and with a loreal pit. The dorsal surface is grayish-brown with two rows of large dark markings, these markings often connect to form transverse bands; the ventral surface is white with brown spots. Average body size: 500mm.
Biology and Ecology
This species is found on the ground in evergreen forests and on limestone mountains or granite outcrops. Occasionally, they are encountered hunting at night in regenerating forests in limestone mountain areas.
Distribution
Vietnam: Lao Cai (Fan Si Pan), Thua Thien – Hue (Bach Ma), Phong Nha – Ke Bang.
Worldwide: None.
Value
The horned viper is a venomous snake, of scientific and aesthetic value.
Status
This is a very rare snake, with only two specimens collected: the first specimen collected by J. Vidal in Bach Ma; the second specimen collected by the Delacour and Love expedition near the Fan Si Pan range near Sapa at an altitude of 2000m in 1929. Threat level: Rank R.
Recommended Conservation Measures
Prohibit hunting and trading of this snake species. Protect the habitats where this snake is distributed and collect for captive breeding.
