Vietnamese Name:Cua núi mai nhẵn
Family:Potamidae
Order:Decapoda
Class (Group):

Identification Characteristics:

The carapace is slightly arched with a smooth surface, featuring only a post-frontal ridge. The frontal region possesses oblique lateral margins, and the anterior frontal margin has a deep, central indentation, dividing it into two lobes. The anterolateral margins of the carapace are slender, appearing as a row of small nodules. The pereiopods (walking legs) are slender and long. Biology and Ecology:

This species inhabits mountain streams. It is typically found in soft-bottomed crevices under rocks along the stream banks.

Distribution:

  • Vietnam: Nghe An (Dong Tam Ve), Thua Thien – Hue (A Luoi), South Central Coast (Phuc Son).
  • Global: Endemic to Vietnam.

Value:

This is an endemic species, valuable for scientific study and as a food source.

Conservation Status:

The species has a narrow distribution in the Central Highlands, estimated to be under 20,000 km². The distribution area is fragmented. Studies conducted in 2000-2001 in A Luoi, Thua Thien – Hue, indicated that the species is heavily exploited by local people for food.

Assessment:

VU (Vulnerable) B1+2a,b,e.

Conservation Measures:

It is listed in the Vietnam Red Data Book. Recommendations include limiting exploitation and further research into its biology and ecology.
