Description:

This bird species is small, with a body length of 64 cm. From a distance, the plumage appears black. When not in breeding season, the head and neck are bordered with white. In dim light, it can be mistaken for the Eurasian Curlew, but it adopts an upright posture, resembling a heron, and has rounded wings.

Habitat and Ecology:

This is a resident species. It is relatively common. Known habitats include Melaleuca forests, grasslands and flooded vegetation, marshes and lakes, and wooded areas in the plains.

Distribution:

The Mekong Delta (bird sanctuaries, many Melaleuca forests, and wooded areas). Commonly observed in U Minh Thượng, Kiên Giang; Trà Cú Bird Garden, Trà Vinh, and other locations.
