Description:

This bird species measures 19 cm in length. It has a slender build, a black, needle-like bill, and typically swims on the water’s surface. In flight, prominent white wing bars and dark flanks are visible. During the breeding season, the female has a brighter plumage and is larger than the male. Outside of the breeding season, the plumage is a mix of white and gray, with dark markings on the face. Juveniles have a dark brown upper body, brownish-yellow toes, and a pinkish-brown chest and neck. They often gather in lively flocks, swimming actively on the water’s surface or heading out to sea. They dive swiftly and bob their heads while feeding on the water’s surface. The bird’s flight is graceful, like a swallow’s, and it is relatively unafraid of humans.

Distribution:

Found in coastal areas of Nghĩa Hưng and the Xuân Thủy Nature Reserve in Nam Định province. It inhabits intertidal mudflats and coastal wetlands.

Status:

Migratory species. Uncommon.
