Description:
Adult birds have a pale brownish-gray head, a dull greenish-blue back, and a bright azure blue rump, flanks, and upper tail. The sides of the neck and the belly are yellowish-tinged with a rufous hue. The eyes are brown. The beak is red (with a slightly black tip). The legs are red. Juveniles have streaks on their chests.
Biology:
The breeding season begins in March or February. Nests are built along streams or in tree cavities.
Habitat and Ecology:
This species is a resident bird found in forests along rivers and streams, potentially up to an altitude of 1200 meters. It can also be found in plains, near ponds, estuaries, and mangrove forests.
Distribution:
- Vietnam: Quảng Trị, Thừa Thiên – Huế, Quảng Nam – Đà Nẵng, Gia Lai, Kom Tum, Đồng Nai, and Tây Ninh provinces.
- Global: Myanmar, Andaman Islands, and Indochina.
Conservation Status:
Commonly found only in a few locations, such as Cát Tiên National Park. Threat level: T (Vulnerable).

Similar to those for the Common Kingfisher. Protect and sustainably manage near-water landscapes. Prevent the pollution of natural water bodies.
