Identification:
A small mammal belonging to the family Felidae (cats).
Physical Description:
Possesses soft, fluffy fur exhibiting significant variation in markings. The base coat color is greyish-blue or reddish-brown. The head, neck, and back display numerous black streaks. The dorsal fur pattern resembles that of a clouded leopard, but with smaller, fragmented, and less distinct markings blending into the base coat. Two black stripes extend from the neck to the base of the tail, separate from the dorsal markings. Numerous small spots are present on the thighs. The tail length is approximately equal to the body length and features numerous small black streaks, lacking the distinct ring patterns of the clouded leopard.
Biology and Ecology:
Limited research has been conducted on this species. Its diet consists of birds, small rodents, snakes, reptiles, amphibians, and insects. The cat inhabits and is active in areas of large-tree forests and regenerating forests, including both earthen and rocky mountains, and is nocturnal.
Distribution:
- Within Vietnam: Sample collection locations include Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Son La, Bac Kan, Phu Tho, Dak Lak, and Lam Dong provinces. The species is widely distributed throughout the mountainous forest regions of the country.
- Global: Nepal, India, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand.
Value:
A valuable and rare species, possessing scientific research value and contributing to the regulation of prey populations.
Conservation Status:
The species was once relatively common in evergreen and semi-evergreen forests. Due to extensive hunting and habitat degradation, the population of this species has experienced a severe decline.

Conservation Measures:
Listed in the Vietnam Red Book and Group IB of Decree 32/2006/ND-CP. Strict control of hunting and trade in wildlife is necessary, along with the protection of prey resources in the forests where this cat species resides.
