Identification:

The shell is elongated and ovoid, approximately 70 mm in length. The external surface is white and glossy, with prominent growth lines. The inner surface is a dark pink, which distinguishes it from the white egg cowrie (Ovula ovum), which has a coffee-colored inner surface. The outer lip has approximately 25 teeth, which are not distinct and irregular. The inner lip is without teeth.

Biology and Ecology:

This species inhabits intertidal and subtidal zones, attaching to coral reefs or rocky reefs. It typically lives far from estuaries in clear water, at depths of 1-5 meters, and often coexists with white egg cowries.

Distribution:

  • Vietnam: Van Phong Bay – Ben Goi.
  • Worldwide: From East Africa to Tonga.

Value:

This species has no economic significance but possesses scientific, artistic, and collector’s value.

Conservation Status:

Listed in the Red Book (1992). It is valued for handicrafts. It is heavily hunted, with a population decline of approximately 20%. It has only been found in Khanh Hoa, with a limited distribution. The population is very small and is at high risk of extinction.

Conservation Measures:

General protection of the natural ecosystem is needed. Blasting and coral exploitation are prohibited, and harvesting should be banned for a period of time.
