Identification:

Large, harmless snake, exceeding 2 meters in length. The head is elongated and flattened, with a pale reddish-gray coloration. The back features large, dark gray blotches, nearly circular with black borders and lighter outer edges. Along the flanks, there is a series of smaller, staggered markings. The tail displays alternating bands of white or pale red and gray-black, which do not connect on the ventral side.

Biology and Ecology:

This snake inhabits mountainous forests, specifically within limestone caves, and is active both during the day and at night. It lays eggs in crevices lined with fallen leaves. Its primary diet consists of bats and rodents.

Distribution:

  • Vietnam: Cao Bằng, Tuyên Quang, Bắc Kạn, Lạng Sơn, Thái Nguyên, Sơn La, Vĩnh Phúc, Hòa Bình, Ninh Bình, Nghệ An provinces.
  • Worldwide: Southern China (Guangdong, Guangxi).

Value:

This species holds scientific research and aesthetic value. It is also a natural pest control agent, preying on rodents that can damage agricultural crops.

Conservation Status:

Habitat fragmented, with fewer than 10 known locations. The size and quality of its habitat are declining, and the number of subpopulations is low.
Classified as VU B1+2a,b,c (Vulnerable).

Conservation Measures:

Strict protection through the prohibition of hunting and trade, as well as captive breeding within national parks and natural reserves.
