Identification:
This attractive small snake is characterized by a gray to brown body color, featuring two rows of small, dark brown stripes along its flanks, running parallel to the spine. The dorsal region is lighter in color and exhibits small yellow spots. There are no dark markings on the surface of the tail. A broad, dark brown stripe extends from the snout, passing through the eye, to the upper lip. Another stripe runs from the top of the head to the jaw line but does not reach the ventral scales. The chin is white, while the belly is pale orange-red with irregular black, quadrilateral markings, which are largest and most numerous near the vent.
Biology and Ecology:
This snake species is a nocturnal terrestrial predator, inhabiting various habitats. These range from evergreen forests to agricultural lands and even abandoned urban areas. Its diet consists of frogs, small rodents, and, occasionally, bird eggs.
Distribution:
Vietnam: Bac Thai, Ninh Binh (Cuc Phuong), Nghe An, Lam Dong (Da Lat), Khanh Hoa (Nha Trang), Tay Ninh, Dong Nai (Dinh Quan), Tien Giang (My Tho), Soc Trang, Ba Ria – Vung Tau (Con Dao).
Global: This species is predominantly found in Thailand and China (Yunnan). It is also present in Laos and Cambodia.
Conservation Status:
This species is rare, and its populations are sparse. Immediate conservation measures are necessary to protect this species.
