Adult:
The adult has white feathers above the eyes and a broad eyebrow stripe extending to the nape. The remaining head and neck are rufous. The axillaries and underwings are black with a dark greenish sheen. The upper neck has a bluish-red or purplish-green iridescence. The back and wing coverts are golden-green with a bronze sheen. The flanks and upper tail coverts are rufous-brown with a reddish sheen. The greater wing coverts and primary and secondary feathers are black with a greenish sheen on the outer vanes. The tail and undertail coverts are rufous-brown.
Juvenile:
The juvenile has a rufous-brown crown. The lower back has pale rufous and brown streaks. The ear coverts are grey, and the chin is white. The belly is pale rufous. The flanks are rufous with white streaks. The eyes are brown. The bill is pale greenish-yellow, with a reddish base and a bright yellow tip. The frontal plate is pale red. The legs are dull dark green.

Wing: 145 – 198 mm; Tail: 34 – 52 mm; Tarsus: 65 – 80 mm; Bill: 31 – 39 mm.
Distribution:
This species is distributed in India, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Java, Sumatra, and Indochina.
Vietnam:
This species is found in South Vietnam and South Central Vietnam (to Ninh Thuan).
