Description:
The bird measures 69 cm in length, larger than the Vega Gull. It has a sloping forehead and a heavy bill, giving its head a distinctive “muzzled” appearance. The eyes are dark, and the eyebrows are white.
- Adults: During the breeding season, a black head distinguishes it from other gull species.
- In winter: The head is white with a dark patch covering the rear of the head.
The flight style is particularly distinctive and easily recognizable.
- First-year birds: The crown is pale gray, and the upper back is gray with dark brown coverts. In flight, this contrasts sharply with a broad black tail band. The primary feathers are black, and the secondary feathers show black markings.
Distribution:
Found along the coastal areas of the Red River Delta. This species typically inhabits coastal regions.
Status:
Migratory. Rare.
