Identification:
Description:
A small-sized flying squirrel.
The fur on the back and head is bright orange-yellow, with black bases. The fur on the patagium (gliding membrane) is black. The cheeks and the base of the tail are reddish-orange. The legs are tawny brown.
Biology and Ecology:
In Vietnam, this flying squirrel species is only found in tall forests on high mountains of Côn Đảo Island. It nests in large tree hollows. The squirrels typically give birth to 1 to 2 offspring. Little is known about the squirrel’s diet.
Distribution:
Within Vietnam: This species is only found in Bà Rịa – Vũng Tàu Province (Côn Đảo National Park).
Global: Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia.
Value:
This is a rare species with a limited distribution. Its presence is restricted to Côn Đảo Island in Vietnam, making it of significant scientific value.
Conservation Status:
The population is small, with a limited distribution and geographic isolation. It is currently conserved within Côn Đảo National Park.
