Adult Vulture Description

  • Head and Neck: Entirely feathered. Occasionally, a few white fluffy feathers are present on the neck. A long white ruff encircles the lower neck, surrounding a brown patch on the breast.
  • Upperparts: Brown back.
  • Underparts: Pale white rump and uppertail coverts, with pale brown feather bases.
  • Wings: Wing coverts and shoulders brown, but slightly paler than the back; the center of the feathers is slightly darker. Flight feathers and tail are dark brown or slightly black.
  • Underwings: Vary in color from brown to pale white.
  • Underparts: Pale reddish-brown belly.
  • Eyes: Dark brown.
  • Bill: Horn-brown.
  • Skin: Pale black skin at the base of the bill. Grayish-brown skin on the head and neck.
  • Legs: Black.

Measurements:

  • Wing: 590 – 630 mm
  • Tail: 237 – 256 mm
  • Tarsus (leg): Approximately 110 mm
  • Bill: 66 – 68 mm

Distribution:

The Indian Vulture is distributed in India, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Indochina. In Vietnam, this species has been recorded in Tay Ninh and Ninh Thuan provinces.
