Characteristics:

  • Large. SVL (snout-vent length) > 150 mm.
  • Head distinct from the body.
  • Tail round, not enlarged at the base.
  • Body color ranges from grayish-brown to grayish-green with reddish-brown spots on the back.
  • Dorsal patterns also include transverse bars and short streaks.
  • 10-14 supralabial scales.
  • 9-13 infralabial scales.
  • The nostril contacts the rostral scale.
  • 3-6 nasal scales.
  • 0-1 internasal scales.
  • 17-29 scales between the eyes.
  • 12-18 rows of tubercles on the back.
  • 133-141 scales between the chin and the vent.
  • 82-103 scales around the body.
  • 13-19 subdigital lamellae under the first toe of the hind foot.

Habitat and Ecology:

  • Nocturnal reptile species, typically found on rocks in high-altitude evergreen forests ranging from 200 to 600m.
  • Active at night.
  • Feeds on insects found in the area.
  • Lays 2 eggs in crevices or cracks in rock faces at the beginning of the rainy season each year.

Distribution:

  • Found in Vietnam and China, recently discovered in mountainous regions of the northern provinces bordering China.
