Identification:
This snake species is small, with a rounded and indistinct head. The lower jaw has an inset structure. The body is cylindrical, stout, and covered in smooth scales. They are capable of color variation, appearing in shades of gray, brown, or reddish-black with or without small, circular black spots on a white to yellowish-white belly. Juveniles display dark, scattered circular spots.
Biology and Ecology:
Their primary diet consists of small fish and crabs. They give birth to litters of 6-15 offspring, each approximately 18 cm in length. This nocturnal snake inhabits tidal rivers, coastal areas, and mangrove forests with abundant Cỏ lác (Sedge) vegetation.
Distribution:
- Vietnam: Sóc Trăng, Minh Hải (Năm Căn).
- Global: Southern Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Australia.
Conservation Status:
The population is relatively common in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam.
