Identification:
This medium-sized snake species possesses a multi-colored, yet indistinct head. Its body is cylindrical with smooth scales. The dorsal surface is gray or olive-colored, marked with brown stripes along the spine and paler stripes separated by fine black lines on each side. The head is brown with pairs of light-colored lines converging towards the snout. The ventral surface is white or yellow, often featuring a central dark line or a series of dark spots.
Biology and Ecology:
Their diet primarily consists of fish. Females give birth to litters of 4-18 offspring. Newborn snakes, measuring approximately 14 cm in length, resemble adults. These snakes are docile and diurnal, typically found in freshwater habitats such as low-lying areas, ponds, lakes, and swamps.
Distribution:
Vietnam: This species is distributed from Phu Yen province southward to Minh Hai province.
Global: Primarily found in tropical regions of Southeast Asia, including southern Thailand (north of 17°N), the Malay Peninsula, and Singapore.
Conservation Status:
This species remains relatively common in the Mekong Delta provinces. However, excessive exploitation and a lack of environmental management are impacting its population.
