Identification Characteristics:

The Eyelash Pit Viper ( Trimeresurus macrolepis ) has a stout body. The head is triangular. The top of the head is covered with large scales. The snout extends forward and upward, forming a prominent appendage. A small pit (the loreal pit) is located between the eye and the nostril. The dorsal surface is brown with black markings that form X-shapes or (greater than) symbols. The ventral surface has large black blotches. The body length is approximately 800 – 1,500 mm, sometimes reaching 1,800 mm.

Biology and Ecology:

Eyelash Pit Vipers typically inhabit high mountainous forest areas near streams, but are also found in cultivated fields. They often rest on dry leaf litter near large rocks. They are generally slow-moving and tend to avoid humans when encountered. Their diet consists of small mammals (mice), birds, or reptiles. The snakes lay approximately 20-26 eggs.

Distribution:

Vietnam: Lao Cai (Sapa), Lang Son (Mau Son), Vinh Phuc (Tam Dao).

World: Southern China (including Hainan Island).

Value:

The Eyelash Pit Viper is a venomous snake capable of causing death in humans. It has value in scientific research and aesthetics.

Conservation Status:

The remaining population is very small due to habitat loss. Threat level: Endangered.

Recommended Conservation Measures:

Prohibit hunting and capture. Protect the habitats where this species is found. Consider organized captive breeding programs.
