Identifying Characteristics:

  • Small size. Maximum SVL (snout-vent length) reaches 75.3 mm.
  • The dorsal surface exhibits 4 to 5 dark transverse bands between the forelimbs and hindlimbs.
  • A single band encircles the nape and terminates at the posterior margin of the eye.
  • The dorsal surface of the head, body, hindlimbs, and base of the tail are covered in tubercles (small, wart-like bumps).
  • 34-40 ventral scales across the mid-body.
  • No lateral skin folds.
  • 20-28 precloacal and femoral pores arranged in a line in males.
  • Enlarged femoral and precloacal scales.
  • 5-8 postcloacal spines in both males and females.
  • 17-21 subdigital lamellae (scales under the toes) on the fourth toe of the hind foot.
  • Subcaudal scales (scales under the tail) are transversely expanded.

Biology and Ecology:

  • Nocturnal reptile species, typically inhabiting evergreen forest areas, rocky mountains, and caves, emerging only at night.
  • Feeds on insects found within their habitat.
  • Lays two eggs in crevices in rock faces at the beginning of the rainy season each year.

Distribution:

  • Endemic to Vietnam, recently discovered in rocky mountainous forests surrounding Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, Quang Binh province.
