Identification Characteristics:
The shell is cylindrical, approximately 125mm long, heavy, and robust. The dorsal surface is dark brown, transitioning to a lighter brown near the ventral ridge, with dark brown circular spots. The ventral surface is yellow, with short, coarse teeth that do not extend to the sides of the abdomen.
Biology and Ecology:
This species inhabits coral reefs and rocky reefs. It is distributed from the intertidal zone, occasionally extending to the subtidal zone, down to a depth of 10 meters. It prefers high salinity environments, away from river mouths, with clear water.
Distribution:
- Vietnam: Quảng Ngãi (Lý Sơn Island), Khánh Hòa.
- World: Seychelles, Tonga.
Value:
It is a rare and valuable species in Vietnam and globally. Its attractive shape and color make it suitable for ornamental use and collection.
Conservation Status:
It is listed in the Vietnam Red Book (1992). Its distribution is limited, with habitats typically not exceeding 10 km². The quality of its habitat is declining. Only two local subpopulations have been identified. The population size has declined by approximately 20%, with a projected decline of >50% within 5-10 years. The primary causes are environmental pollution and habitat destruction.
Assessment:
VU A1c D2 (Vulnerable).
Conservation Measures:
While it is not a target for exploitation, the species’ rarity necessitates the protection of its environment. The use of explosives and coral extraction, which damage its habitat, should be prohibited.
