Identification:
- Shell: Small, approximately 32mm in length. The dorsal surface is gray with small, fine brown spots. Larger, less dense darker spots are present near the ventral margin. The dorsal and ventral surfaces are separated by a raised ridge that runs around the shell.
- Ventral Surface: White.
- Aperture: Large, with coarse and sparse teeth.
Biology and Ecology:
- Inhabits intertidal and subtidal zones on hard substrates. Often found hidden within coral reefs or rock crevices.
Distribution:
- Vietnam: Van Phong Bay – Ben Goi.
- Global: Red Sea, Indian Ocean.
Value:
- Valuable for handicrafts and as a genetic resource. Very rare in Vietnam.
Conservation Status:
- Listed in the Vietnam Red Data Book (1992). Found only in Khanh Hoa province, with a limited distribution. Population decline is estimated at around 20%. Due to low numbers, the species is vulnerable to extinction.
IUCN Red List Category: VU A1a C1.
Conservation Measures:
- Habitat protection is essential. Prohibition of dynamite fishing and coral exploitation. Live individuals should be released immediately upon discovery.
