Identification:

  • Shell: Tubular, approximately 45 mm in length. The dorsal surface is gray or pale pink, with numerous silvery-white circular spots, and a silvery-white stripe running from the head to the apex of the shell. The two ventral edges are yellow, with numerous black spots. The ventral surface is relatively flat, with dense, smooth teeth, and a narrow aperture.

Biology and Ecology:

  • Inhabits coral reefs and rocky intertidal zones. Distributed from the intertidal zone to the subtidal zone.

Distribution:

  • Vietnam: Van Phong Bay – Ben Goi, Truong Sa (Spratly Islands).
  • Global: Indian-Pacific Ocean, East Africa, Polynesia.

Value:

  • A rare species, valued for its artistic and collectible properties.

Conservation Status:

  • Listed in the Vietnam Red Book (1992). Very limited reserves, with a narrow distribution; only two subpopulations have been discovered. Heavily hunted due to its artistic value, with a population decline of approximately 20%.
  • IUCN Red List Category: VU A1 C1 D1 (Vulnerable).

Conservation Measures:

  • Protect rocky habitats and coral reefs, the natural habitats of Curra snails. Currently, exploitation of this species should be prohibited.
