Identification:
Medium-sized mussel, with a thick, irregularly oval shell. The tail is elongated and rounded, while the head is slightly truncated. The anterior margin is rounded, the ventral margin curves smoothly, and the dorsal margin slopes slightly towards the tail. The shell surface is smooth, marked only by growth lines ranging from dark brown to grayish-brown. The nacre is bluish-white. The outer ridge in the posterior dorsal region is prominent, while the inner ridge is faint.
Biology and Ecology:
Inhabits sandy-mud substrates in the mountainous and midland river regions.
Distribution:
- Within Vietnam: Vĩnh Phúc (Phó Đáy River), Phú Thọ (confluence of rivers – Việt Trì).
- Worldwide: Endemic to Vietnam.
Value:
Used as a food source.
Status:
The description is based on Haas’s (1929: 210-213) description of 8 specimens collected at the Việt Trì river confluence. Currently, there is a lack of information regarding population size and distribution. No specimens have been collected recently.
IUCN Red List Category:
Data Deficient (DD).
Conservation Measures:
Included in the Vietnam Red Data Book and the list of protected species of the Fisheries sector before 1996. Recommendations: Conduct further surveys and research to determine the distribution and population size of this species in the rivers of Vĩnh Phúc and Phú Thọ provinces.
