Adult Bird:

The adult bird exhibits the following characteristics:

  • Head: The sides of the head feature long, feathery crests and a black nape with an iridescent green sheen.
  • Neck: A broad, semi-circular white patch is present on the back of the neck.
  • Upperparts: The back, shoulders, wing coverts, and tertials are black with a purple or green iridescence.
  • Tail: The central tail feathers have white tips.
  • Wings: The wings are chestnut brown, with darker tips on the feathers.
  • Underparts: The chin, throat, and upper breast are a pale rusty-red; the lower breast is white.
  • Flanks and Belly: The flanks and rear belly are dark brown.
  • Undertail: The undertail coverts are black with a green sheen.
  • Underwings: The underwings are a pale rusty-red.

Juvenile Bird:

The juvenile bird displays the following characteristics:

  • Upperparts: The back is brown, with broad chestnut edges on the wing feathers.
  • Underparts: The underparts are white.
  • Eyes: The eyes are a pale reddish-brown.
  • Bill: The bill is black; the base of the lower mandible is slightly yellowish, and the bill edges are pink.
  • Legs: The legs are lead-gray or brownish-gray.

Distribution:

This species is found in Sri Lanka, eastern India, Myanmar, Southern China, Thailand, Indochina, Malaysia, Borneo, the Philippines, and adjacent islands.

In Vietnam: This species is present throughout the mountainous and lowland forest regions, particularly in areas with dense undergrowth, but it is relatively rare.
