Identification:

Large-sized clam, thick shell, nearly round but irregular. The anterior end is round, and the posterior end is slightly elongated, forming a rounded point. The dorsal margin is curved, the anterior margin is smoothly rounded, and the ventral margin is curved. The outer shell surface is smooth, yellowish-brown, with coarse growth lines. The nacre is white with iridescent colors.

Biology and Ecology:

Lives in sandy-mud bottoms of rivers.

Distribution:

  • Vietnam: Tuyen Quang and Phu Tho provinces (Lo River – Viet Tri).
  • Global: Thailand.

Value:

Has food value; the shell is used to make buttons and as nacre inlay material.

Conservation Status:

Currently, there is a lack of information on population size and distribution.

IUCN Red List Status:

Data Deficient (DD).

Conservation Measures:

Included in the Vietnam Red Book and the list of protected species by the Fisheries sector since before 1996. Recommendations: Conduct surveys and further research on the distribution and population size of this species in the rivers of Tuyen Quang and Phu Tho provinces.
