Adult Plumage:
The crown, nape, and neck are dark, interspersed with some white feathers. The forehead and sides of the head are white, but with some brown flecking between the feathers. The rest of the dorsal surface is dark brown; the feathers on the shoulders have paler edges, sometimes appearing almost white. The feathers on the upper tail are paler with white edges. The wing and tail feathers are almost entirely black; the central tail feathers have a slight white streak at the base of the inner vane. The ventral surface is entirely white.
Old Birds:
The plumage is similar to adult birds, but the crown is completely dark brown and lacks any white feathers.
Eyes: Dark brown.
Bill: Horn-gray.
Legs: Pinkish-gray.

- Tarsus (leg): 46 – 54 mm, 48 – 53 mm
Distribution:
This species is distributed in the western Pacific, from southern Japan to Malaysia and New Guinea.
In Vietnam, it is often found along the south-central coast, and on the Truong Sa and Tay Sa islands. It is the only species of the Procellariidae family found in Vietnam.
