Description:
This bird is approximately 15 cm in length and closely resembles the Red-necked Stint in morphology and behavior. It differs from the Red-necked Stint by having longer legs and a longer, blunter bill. During breeding season, its plumage is a deeper orange-brown than brick-red. It has a distinctly white chin and throat, a cream-colored V-shaped pattern clearly visible on its upper back, and rufous (reddish-brown) tertials and wing coverts (grey-brown in the Red-necked Stint).
It exhibits dark streaks on the sides of its head and spots on its breast (less prominent in the Red-necked Stint). Outside the breeding season, identification is challenging. However, juveniles always display a prominent white V-shaped pattern on their upper backs.
Distribution:
Coastal areas of the Red River Delta. This species inhabits intertidal mudflats and coastal wetlands.
Status:
Winter visitor. Uncommon.
