Description:

Adults are approximately 30 cm in length. The upperparts are dark brown with a reddish-brown tinge. The head, neck, and nape have numerous thick black streaks. A white stripe with black spots runs through the eyes, extending down the sides of the neck. The chin and throat are white with black spots; the neck sides are reddish-yellow with black spots; the breast is yellowish-brown. The flanks are reddish-brown with large, dark black streaks. The skin around the eyes is dark red, and the beak is yellow. The legs are yellow.

Distribution:

This species is distributed in the Ke Go Nature Reserve (Ha Tinh) and the Bach Ma National Park, Phong Dien forest area (Thua Thien Hue), and Dakrong (Quang Tri).

Conservation Status:

The species is resident and endemic to Vietnam, and not commonly found. It is globally threatened, listed as Endangered (EN) (Collar et al. 1994).

Habitat:

They inhabit evergreen forests in low mountains and secondary forests. They can be found up to an altitude of approximately 600 meters in the Central Vietnam region.
