Adult Bird Description:
Male:
The dorsal plumage is dark brown with a reddish-brown hue. Each feather exhibits dark transverse bars. The head, nape, and neck display dense dark bars, making these areas appear nearly black. A prominent white stripe with black spots extends through the eye and down the sides of the neck. The chin and throat are white with black speckling. The foreneck and sides of the neck are yellowish-brown with black speckling.
The breast is light brown, tinged with yellowish-brown, and exhibits irregular dark streaks. The abdomen is white with a yellowish-brown tinge. The undertail coverts are pale yellowish-brown, occasionally with dark streaks. The wings are reddish-brown with dark bars. The flanks are yellowish-brown with larger and bolder dark streaks.
Female:
Very similar to the male but smaller in size. The eyes are brown. The skin around the eyes is dark red. The beak is yellow, with a yellow base. The legs are yellow.
Measurements:
- Male: Wing: 150 mm; Tail: 70 mm; Tarsus: 38 mm; Bill: 15 mm.
- Female: Wing: 141 mm; Tail: 70 mm; Tarsus: 35 mm; Bill: 16 mm.
Distribution:
This species has only been recorded in the Trường Sơn mountain range in Quảng Trị Province, Vietnam, and in Southern Laos.
