Description:

This is a small duck, approximately 40 cm in length.

  • Male: Distinct facial patterns are easily recognizable.
  • Female: Resembles the female Tufted Duck, but with a white spot at the base of the bill and also somewhat resembles the male’s face. The entire breast is a bright reddish-chestnut color.
  • Male (non-breeding plumage) and Juveniles: Difficult to distinguish from the Tufted Duck, except they appear larger and have longer scapular feathers (if present).

Distribution:

Northeast Vietnam. Coastal areas of the Red River Delta. Habitats include wetlands, rivers, and lakes.

Status:

Migratory and relatively common.
